Pros and Cons of Pebble Tec Pool Surfaces

You have a few different choices when it comes to the finish and water proofing of the inside of your new or remodeled pool. The most common is standard plaster, which is a made up of cement, sand and additives. Pebble Tec is made up of cement, sand and aggregates (pebbles & stones).

Pebble Tec Explained

As mentioned above, Pebble Tec is cement, sand and aggregate (pebbles, stones) collected from riverbeds and beaches all over the world as well as additives and pigment. After being mixed onsite, it’s pressure pumped through a hose. The technician then smooths it over the pool walls and the floor with a trowel to make it even. The very top layer of cement is then hosed away to expose the pebbles, and the pool is left to cure for about 24 hours. After that, the surface is acid rinsed and treated to bring out the pebbles’ brightness. Then sometimes it is buffed and cleaned with water depending on the specific type of pebble product.

Pro #1 – Durability

The strength of the Pebble Tec aggregate makes it very strong. With the right care, a Pebble Tec finished pool can last more well over 25 years.

Pro #2 – The Color

The colors that Pebble Tec can come in range from nearly black to white, with intervening colors such as Blue Lagoon, Caribbean Blue, Creme de Menthe, Moonlight Gray and Jade. To make the colors even more spectacular, the technicians can add customized pebble finishes such as Shimmering Sea shells or Luminous. Guests will gasp when they see the color of a Pebble Tec treated pool. They’ll also be mesmerized by the way the light shimmers in the water thanks to the extra finishes.

Con #1 – Surface Texture

Pebble Tec is made of cement and pebbles. While the pebbles are small and smooth, some people claim that the surface is a little hard on the feet. Pebble Sheen is made with even smaller pebbles for an even smother surface and a more formal look.

Con #2 – Cost

Pebble Tec finished pools are more expensive than other options. They can cost twice as much as a pool with a more traditional plaster finish.

Overall

Pebble Tec pools are works of stunning beauty that can last for decades. They are an excellent choice for any pool. Once established, they’re easy to maintain. Just make sure it’s the Pebble Tec® brand and not an imitation.
