Custom pools have come a long way! Nowadays a pool owner can turn their home swimming pool into their own private oasis. Advanced technology has allowed features to be much more than just a diving board. Here are just a few of the special features that can be added to a swimming pool.
Spa
The spa is a small body of water that is normally attached to your regular pool so that you can heat it to a much higher temperature (104 degrees) and include directional jets to create a therapeutic and relaxing soak. There are so many benefits of a spa. Many owners love how relaxed they feel and how well they sleep at night after spending some time in the spa.
Waterfalls
The very sound of a waterfall can be soothing, and it gives the pool a feeling of being in a tropical paradise. A waterfall is very decorative and is a great addition to any pool. Waterfalls can be created to be small and resemble a creek or large and feel like you are near a raging river that can flow over your head and give you the sensation of being in the middle of an oasis on a tropical island.
Spillways / Water Features
Spillways are types of waterfalls. They are created by allowing water to spill over the dam that protects a raised spa from the swimming pool or just from the sides of the swimming pool. They can be single, multiple or tiered for a more natural look. They can come from under lips in the coping so that they are invisible when not running or even out of pots or other decorative structures like columns.
Fountain
A fountain can be a simple bubbler or an extravagant edifice that resembles the fountains of Versailles. Regardless of your style, a fountain adds lots of beauty to your pool and yard.
Baja Step / Beach Entry
This is one of many names for a pool entrance that allows the bather to enter the same way one would walk from the beach into the ocean on a sloping deck into the pool. It’s not only a very cool look for a swimming pool but is just the thing for bathers who may find it difficult to handle steps or a ladder.
Swim Up Bars
The swim-up bar is often located at the pools edge or at the bottom of an outdoor kitchen. This is exactly how it sounds. It is a bar that you can access while in the pool. This is popular in resorts, but it certainly can be added to your personal pool. Some swim up bars even have submerged barstools, made of concrete and water proofed with plaster and tile.
LED Lights
The days of snapping a colored filter over the incandescent or halogen lights in their pool are long gone. LED lights can actually be programmed to change color and/or “swim” a sequence, for example, red, white and blue for July 4th. An LED light has the ability to produce millions of colors, including white, simply by manipulating the primary colors of red, green and blue. Few things set the mood in a pool more than an underwater light show at night.
